At the stroke of midnight on the eve of the Lunar New Year (which was then technically the start of the year of the rat 2008), the whole of Miri lighted up with burst after burst of colorful fireworks! Almost every single Chinese home had fireworks shooting up into the midnight sky. Hubby and I, together with all our neighbours along the street were outside last night enjoying the sights and not to mention the sounds from red firecrackers popping from all directions.
One of our neighbours had kindly presented us with one roll of red fire crackers (he said it was not right for us not to have any, after all it's New Year's Eve!) and we joined in the celebration on our street.
This was entirely different from how New Year's Eve is like in Alor Setar or Penang. It is somewhat quieter over there...but over here, it was like the whole citywas one big party! Every Chinese family home had red lanterns up at the front porch - one was able to tell who's Chinese and who's not during this period...:)
I attempted to take some videos of the fireworks from residential areas in Senadin, Lutong and Pujut - those visible from our street last night. They aren't the best quality (taken by my Canon digicam) and hardly captured the festivities of the night, but just something to share.
Fireworks from Pujut and Lutong
More fireworks from Pujut....I wonder whose house those were from...
